My goal with The Neutral Axis Club is to not only inspire others to become engineers but also inspire engineers to be the change they want to see in the engineering community.
Meet Wilson Raposo-Oleinik, PE!
I am originally from the Dominican Republic and moved to the United States seeking the American dream, which started in 2011 after high school graduation.
Upon arrival in NYC, my first college experience was at BMCC-CUNY, where I learned English and took my first-year college courses. I eventually transferred to Cornell University, where I graduated with a bachelor’s in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Structural Engineering in May 2017.
Upon graduation, I struggled for months to find a job, which is entirely my fault since I did not apply for a single job after graduation. I do not recommend waiting for this late to apply for jobs — but I knew nothing about writing my own resume or applying for a job upon graduation.
While in college, I worked at Starbucks, so I had some Starbucks skills. Therefore, while I was job hunting after graduation, I worked at a Starbucks for a few months until I got my first job in October 2017 in a city agency in NYC, where I gained lots of project management experience and exposure to city projects.
In March 2018, I moved on to structural engineering consulting, where I gained design experience in different types of projects such as building and nonbuilding structures, temporary structures, and other small-scale projects.
I recently moved to a software structural engineering company based in California, which led to my transition from the great NYC to Southern California for a combined structural engineering experience of 3 years and 9 months.
Fun Facts About Me:
While in college, I failed Reading Comprehension twice and passed on the third attempt. In Spanish, they say... “La tercera es la vencida”. I considered dropping out of college after failing it twice.
I once had an accident and broke my femur bone (I know...impressive!). My recovery included 4 months in bed, four months using a wheelchair, 1-year using crutches, and then eventually learning to walk by myself.
I love playing Volleyball.
